Watch My Directing Reel

This was the Magnet Innovation Center's first ever full-length production. Puffs is a comedy whose humor comes from the rapid pace and high energy of the piece, which led to a much more exaggerated presentation style than I've taken with some of my other works. My approach to this show was extremely ensemble based, with most scenes having the majority of the cast involved and many actors even having multi-character tracks. Being curated for a large outdoor space with over 100 seats and little audience intimacy, the goal of this production was to harness expressive physicality and large-scale action that can be seen by all while maintaining enough nuance and realism to keep this outrageous, fantastical comedy grounded.

Juvie is a 40 minute monologue-based piece following the stories of several inmates at a juvenile detention center and the roads that led them there. Our production was developed for an intimate blackbox space followed by an immediate travel run for competition. As such, our set was incredibly minimalistic and location shifts had to be demonstrated without scenic aid. To achieve this while keeping the abstract nature of the piece, I aimed for a very ensemble-involved approach. The entire cast remained onstage for the entire production, and the ensemble unit played a pivotal role in establishing every scene. Blocking, staging, movement, and direction were often used for mood, emotional appeal, and characteristic development, not just concrete action.

Fooled Around and Fell in Love was an original short play developed for a "Play in a Day" competition. During such competitions, a team of an author, a director, and three actors have twenty four hours to create and develop a production to be performed and adjudicated. Our show was a dramatic, historical piece following the lives of an American Soldier, his mother, and his fiancé as he returns home injured from the Vietnam War and suffering from PTSD. The script was strikingly different from others I'd worked with because it was written as if for film, utilizing cuts, montages, songs, etc. This led me to adopt a style vastly unlike any I'd used before- a multimedia incorporated approach using projection technology and a full film-like soundtrack to enhance the live action. The adjudicators received this untraditional style favorably and named our piece Best Directed, Best Written, Best Use of Technology, and Overall Best Production.
